Duel Terminal

For many Yu-Gi-Oh! players, the cards in the game are nothing more than pretty artwork and random effects. Yet behind the illustrated designs and blocks of effect text lies one of the richest, darkest, and most interconnected fantasy settings in the franchise: Duel Terminal.

Unlike the stories centred around Yugi Muto or Jaden Yuki on television, the Duel Terminal narrative was born quietly in Japan, told through… arcade machines… (Yes) and fragments of lore hidden within official art books, the Master Guides. Instead of focusing on human duelists summoning monsters, the story follows the monsters themselves; a world inhabited by elemental tribes and iconic archetypes players already know well, such as the Ice Barrier, Flamvell, X-Saber, and Dragunity.

From the biological threat of the invading Worms to the awakening of destructive gods and alien corruption, the Duel Terminal saga is a tragic tale of survival, sacrifice, uneasy alliances, and the endless cycle of destruction.

In this article, we will go through the chronology of this world, uncover the secrets hidden behind the cards, and understand how a simple product line shaped one of the most fascinating pieces of Yu-Gi-Oh! lore ever created.

Prepare your defences, because the war for the planet’s fate is about to begin.

Creation of the Duel Terminal World

The world of Duel Terminal was born from darkness through the goddess Sophia, Goddess of Rebirth, guardian of life, death, and everything beyond. The Naturia Sacred Tree, born into this world, spreads its energy to give shape to all living things. Then, this energy goes back to the tree when they die, starting the cycle all over again. Sophia, Goddess of Rebirth, and Tierra, Source of Destruction are the ones in charge of managing this cycle of birth and destruction. But this didn’t last forever. Sophia, Goddess of Rebirth beat Tierra, Source of Destruction and took full control of the Tree for herself. With her power, she made the Core, locking up all the other deities inside the tree.

After Sophia’s departure, the terrible gods appeared, also known as the Fabled, or Demon Roar Gods: Rajin, Leviathan, and Valkyrius, who gave rise to other Fabled creatures. The Fabled also gave rise to a corrupted, evil energy called the Evilswarms, forcing even the Fabled themselves to back off so they wouldn’t get consumed. But up among the stars were the Constellar, who fought this plague and were the ones who locked away the corrupted evil of the Evilswarm. They were watched over by the Vylon, machines made by the Constellar to protect the world from that threat.

After some time, the Dragons of Ice also appeared, beings as powerful as the gods themselves. They were known as Trishula, Brionac, and Gungnir. The dragons’ power was so immense they could destroy the entire world. However, a man named Prior of the Ice Barrier appeared with an artefact, Mirror of the Ice Barrier, that sealed the dragons away.

First Age

The First Era was marked by the four tribes that ruled Duel Terminal through endless war. They were the Flamvell, the tribe of fire; Mist Valley, who lived within the Shrine of Mist Valley; the X-Saber, a group of mercenaries; and finally the Ice Barrier, guardians tasked with keeping the dragons frozen and sealed. Their leaders are, respectively; Flamvell Uruquizas; Mist Valley Thunder Lord; Commander Gottoms, Swordmaster; and the Ice Barrier Generals, as General Grunard of the Ice Barrier.

The war between the four tribes lasted for years until it was interrupted by a meteor that struck Duel Terminal. From it came creatures from another world known as the Worms. These aliens could adapt to their surroundings, consume them, and multiply with ease. Left with no choice, the tribes formed a truce to face this new enemy.

With no other option, the Ice Barrier released Brionac to fight the Worms. Even so, the tribes suffered heavy losses during the conflict.

The Creation of the Ally of Justice

Their second attempt against the invaders came through the creation of machines called Ally of Justice, which proved enough to force the Worms into retreat.

During this period, a new peaceful tribe of Duel Terminal was introduced: the Genex. The Genex were machine beings capable of improving the environment around them. Once they encountered the Worms, the Genex also joined the battle and worked alongside the Ally of Justice, creating stronger versions known as the Genex Ally.

Unfortunately, the X-Saber suffered severe casualties during the war, and their leader, Gottoms, founded the XX-Saber, built around a new generation of swordsmen. A more high-tech tribe with armour kitted out by the Ally of Justice.

Unsatisfied, the Worms also invaded the source of life within Duel Terminal, the Naturia Forest, home of the Naturia Sacred Tree. Although peaceful by nature, the Naturia still fought against their enemies. Then Ally of Justice Field Marshall appeared, confronting the Worms and driving them back once more, before being damaged for good.

The Return of the Fabled

However, Mist Valley Thunder Lord discovered that the Genex were studying an unknown substance taken from the Worm meteorites, intending to use it to strengthen the Ally of Justice, including a dimensional portal, the Cosmic Gateway. But this came at a high price, since the gateway weakened the boundaries between realities, letting the Fabled find their way back. Thunder Lord strongly opposed to these studies and turned against the alliance, only to be attacked by Fabled Raven. Lord Thunder warned everyone that the gods were returning, the Fabled awakened by the chaos on the surface, and by the Allies’ dimensional interference experiments.

The Fabled launched another attack against a Duel Terminal tribe, the Jurrac, guardians of the sacred lands of fire.

The Ally of Justice helped the Genex evolve even further in order to continue the war, leading to the birth of the R-Genex.

Now facing two powerful enemies, the Ice Barrier had to make another difficult choice. They released the seal of the second dragon, Gungnir. With his devastating power, he could control his enemies. Meanwhile, the Shrine of Mist Valley fought the Worms alone until they became targets of the Dragunity tribe’s cavalry, the legendary dragon riders who lived within Dragon Ravine.

Worm Zero and the Final Battle

The Worms’ final weapon then appeared: Worm Zero. Every tribe united to destroy the Worms once and for all, while the Allies unveiled the ultimate weapon, Ally of Justice Decisive Armor, —”An enormous floating fortress, constructed to have the greatest firepower known to the planet…”— which delivered the final shot that destroyed Worm Zero and ended the invasion for good.

The Fabled took advantage of the tribes’ weakened state and moved to conquer them. The Jurrac and the Flamvell, tribes tied to fire, became victims of the Fabled assault. However, events did not unfold as expected, and the remaining Jurrac gathered together and transformed their bodies into a massive blazing meteor, Jurrac Meteor, that crashed into their own nest. The Fabled were caught in the impact, bringing an end to the old tribes while giving rise to a new one, the Neo Flamvell.

Many surviving Fabled joined together and began another wave of attacks, threatening to plunge the world into endless conflict again. The Ice Barrier then decided to release the third dragon, Trishula. The power of the three dragons surpassed every tribe in Duel Terminal. The decision to release them split the Ice Barrier into two factions. Among those caught in the dispute were two friends: Natalia, whose family supported releasing the dragons, and Noellia, whose family opposed it.

The Evilswarm Ritual

The two girls formed a plan to release the Evilswarm and enslave them to fight the Fabled. The ritual failed horribly. Natalia died during the process, while Noellia’s mind became contaminated by the thoughts of the Steelswarm.

The Sacred Spirit of the Ice Barrier used its technique to seal the three dragons once again, sacrificing its own life in the process. After the end of the long war, Noellia began adopting the children of fallen allies, including Avance, Natalia’s son. Even so, Noellia remained consumed by the thoughts of the Steelswarm. She started studying forbidden arts and influenced the children she adopted to follow the same path.

The second age was about to begin…
