Beyond The Brave (2026)

Ashtra, アシュトラ (Ashutora), is a Yu-Gi-Oh archetype introduced in the Beyond the Brave booster pack in July 2026, making it the second release in Series 14 of the TCG/OCG. The new cards are named “Ashtra”, and the first thing that comes to mind when looking at the archetype, especially its boss monster, Ashtra Susanoo, is the Asuras (or Ashuras in Japanese). In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, the Asuras are a class of divine beings or warrior demigods known for their pursuit of power, passion, and wrath. There may also be a reference to the word “Astra”, which, in Sanskrit, refers to a supernatural or divine weapon channelled through a mantra and infused with the power of the gods themselves.

The monsters have fairly chaotic stats, as they are split across four Attributes: EARTH, WIND, FIRE, and WATER. The Traps that Special Summon themselves to the field take on the DARK Attribute. Their Types are equally varied, featuring Wyrm, Spellcaster, Fiend, Insect, and Aqua monsters. The Main Deck monsters are all high-Level monsters arranged into two pairs: two Level 7 monsters (WATER and WIND) and two Level 8 monsters (FIRE and EARTH). The Traps, meanwhile, become Level 1 monsters while on the field.

Ashtra is a Synchro-focused deck, and its defining mechanic is using its Trap Cards as Level 1 Tuner monsters to make Synchro Summons with very little effort. The deck can also Special Summon its monsters by using its Traps, or any other face-down card, giving plenty of value to keeping cards set on the field. Each Trap has two effects: one unique effect and another shared by all of them, allowing it to Special Summon itself as a Level 1 Tuner monster.

This mechanic gives face-down cards an immediate purpose, especially those in the Spell and Trap Zone. If your opponent tries to destroy your Traps, you can Chain with an Ashtra monster from your hand, reveal the targeted Trap, return it to your hand, and Special Summon a monster instead. In many ways, it gives Trap Cards some of the influence they once had in the game.

In the current metagame, the Ashtra archetype has plenty of tools to compete and can comfortably establish itself as a solid Tier deck or, at the very least, a strong Rogue contender. This is especially true when paired with archetypes that can make full use of its Trap-based mechanics. The deck can also perform Synchro Summons during the opponent’s turn and includes effects similar to Book of Moon and Book of Eclipse.

How to Play Ashtra: Guide to Trap that are Tuners

Overview: Theme & Core Mechanics

Ashtra is a Synchro Summon deck whose main characteristic is using Traps as Level 1 Tuner Monsters and performing a Synchro Summon immediately after their effect resolves. In other words, the deck can perform Synchro Summons during the opponent’s turn.

However, what really makes the archetype special is its ability to Special Summon its monsters simply by returning a face-down card you control to your hand. This allows you to summon all of them during the same turn, provided your opponent does not negate their effects. Both the monsters and the Traps have secondary effects that disrupt the opponent or improve consistency, giving each card additional value and allowing them to function either as combo pieces or as disruption pieces.

Another important feature of the deck is that it doesn’t need to rely solely on archetypal Traps. In fact, Ashtra becomes even more powerful when used alongside some of the strongest generic Traps in the game, allowing it to function as a Trap deck with a much wider range of options.

  • Special Summon itself: Each monster can be Special Summoned by returning a face-down card you control to your hand.
  • Level 1 Tuner Traps: The Traps can Special Summon themselves to the field as Level 1 DARK Tuner Monsters and allow you to perform a Synchro Summon immediately after their effect resolves.

Recommended Cards (Decklist)

The deck’s main engine is highly versatile, working with generic Synchro Monsters as well as generic Traps. This means there is a wide range of Traps that can be used in the deck, allowing you to run multiple copies of the ones that work best.
